My typical itinerary in Hong Kong had always been eat, shop, repeat. This time round, I wanted to skip the touristy shopping malls and explore the country’s untainted spots.

Chi Lin Nunnery was first built in 1934, and renovated in Tang dynasty style in 1990. Surrounded by a myriad of high-rise apartments, the large temple complex exuded a deep sense of tranquility and detachment.

For a complete experience, walk over to Nan Lian Garden for a vegetarian meal at Chi Lin Vegetarian, or some tea at Song Cha Xie Teahouse.
